Some info for border commuters?

The guide for cross-border commuters

As a cross-border commuter, you have two or three things to worry about in Switzerland... Health insurance is one of them, as is retirement! Yes, because when you work in Switzerland, you contribute in Switzerland. Swiss contributions mean a Swiss pension!

Health insurance for frontier workers: CMU

Choosing health insurance? What a strange concept when you come from a country where there is only one single scheme for everyone. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. You will have to exercise what is called your right of option within a short period of time and choose whether :

- You wish to remain in a regime very close to the French social security system called "CMU
- Or if you prefer to opt for a Swiss basic insurance called LAMal

The differences are numerous and the impact on annual premiums can be colossal

And the worst thing about it is that this choice will, in almost all cases, be definitive. You will not be able to go back, so believe me, it is wiser to take a moment to look around.

If we were to summarise the CMU in a few words, it is a copy and paste of your health system. The premiums are based exclusively on household income and cover the care of the whole family. And what about the other option?

Health insurance for frontier workers: KVG/LAMal

It is best to be aware of the two options before making a choice. So let's take a look at the KVG/LAMal!

Compulsory for all persons living in Switzerland, it constitutes a basic insurance, but can be supplemented. This Swiss insurance can be very advantageous for many reasons. First of all, the price is fixed and does not depend on the salary, so a financial comparison is necessary!

Secondly, a comparison of the functioning of the two systems is also necessary! Yes, do you want to be treated in France, in Switzerland? Do you want to continue to see your family doctor? Do you go to the doctor often or not at all?

Pension for cross-border commuters

Whether you have just moved to Switzerland or have spent your entire career there, you are entitled to a pension!

The pension in Switzerland is divided into 3 pillars:

- The 1st pillar: The AVS (old age and survivors insurance)
- The 2nd pillar: The LPP (law on occupational benefit planning)
- The 3rd pillar: Private pension provision

The first two pillars are a safe bet. In other words, whether or not you have undertaken anything, you will always be entitled to a pension. The question is "how much? As far as the 3rd pillar is concerned, being a free component, it will only be available if you have created it beforehand...
